In a letter released by her lawyer on Friday, Tandara Caixeta, who left the team’s camp and flew back to Brazil, gave no further explanation but said she had not knowingly taken Ostarina, a drug used by bodybuilders and to improve athletic performance.
“We have full confidence that we will demonstrate that Ostarina inadvertently entered the athlete’s body and that it was not used to enhance athletic performance,” the lawyer’s letter said.
“Recently, many Brazilian athletes have been victims of incidents involving Ostarina,” it added, without further elaborating.
The Brazilian Olympic Committee announced her positive test result shortly before Brazil’s semi-final against South Korea.
Brazil won 3-0 to qualify for Sunday’s gold medal match against the United States.
The committee said the positive result was taken out of the competition at the Brazilian volleyball training center on July 7.
