Donald Trump was elected. So Obama started by raising the libertarians’ spirits as high as they had been, and leaving those spirits in tatters. Trump’s election told them, “Is everything right about America, about how it can be open and inclusive, diverse and forward-looking? Well, America just elected this guy.” If they hadn’t felt so hopeful eight years ago, it probably wouldn’t have been so painful. I can especially relate to that last paragraph. Before the 2016 election, I kept telling my friends not to worry because the voters who elected Barack Obama will never come back and elect Donald Trump. Obviously I was horribly wrong, which meant I had to look for a bit of deep soul to do. The optimism I’ve adopted about this country has dealt a blow, and I’m continuing to grow more pessimistic as time goes on..
